While the start of February has seen welcome precipitation across the state, it has had only minimal impact on the drought. The Western divisions have had slightly above normal moisture for the period, but are behind average for the year-to-date. In addition, the actual amounts of the surplus have been light, less than a quarter of an inch. Departures from normal are slightly higher in the Central divisions, but are still not sufficient to overcome the seasonal departures. The Northeast and South Central divisions have had the largest amounts, and have seen the bulk of the improvement in drought conditions. On the other hand, the Southeastern Division is an area that bears watching. They missed out on the majority of the precipitation, and are a division that typically has higher amounts of winter precipitation. Currently the division is averaging just 34 percent of normal year-to-date, and the deficit is more than an inch and a quarter.
